Tour description:

This tour of almost 850 km is meant for very experienced riders in good physical condition. Tianshan mountains passes, bad tracks, off-road, and stiff climbs going over 3,000m characterize this route. Not all slopes are steep but some are very long and on dirt roads. However it is worth the effort. On your journey you will enjoy remarkable scenery and have the chance to visit the nomads who live in the mountains during summer. The hospitality of the nomads is simply legendary. On rest days you can relax in our yurt camps where you will have the opportunity to hike, take a swim or ride a horse.

Tour Program:

Day 1 – Airport Manas – Bishkek.

Arrival at Manas Airport where we will meet and take to you to the hotel. Time for a short rest until lunch, then preparing your bicycles followed by a short cycling trip north of Bishkek.

Accomodation: Hotel.

Day 2 – Bishkek – Too-Ashu Pass – Suusamyr Valley-Kyzyl-Oi village.

By minibus through the tunnel at the Too-Ashuu Pass (2.564m) to the Suusamyr Valley. After descending a little from the tunnel we start cycling south along the Kokomeren River on a tarmac road to the small village of Kyzyl-Oi, descending down to 1,750m. Total 60 km. Stay with a local family.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Accomodation: Local family.

Day 3 – Chaek village – mountains.

Today we go through the village of Chaek (1,700m) and then up in to the mountains. 80km. Accommodation in tents.

Day 4 – Kara-Keche pass – Son-Kol lake.

Over the Kara-Keche Pass (3,300m). From here there is good view of Lake Son-Kol. From the pass we go down to the lake. Accommodation in yurts. Total distance 115 km.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day 5 – Lake Son-Kol.

Cycling from one side of the lake to the other. Cycling around 50km depending on where the yurts are pitched. Stay in yurts.

Accomodation: Yurts.

Day 6 – Kalmak-Ashuu Pass – Tolok valley.

Cycling up to the Kalmak-Ashuu Pass (3,317m), we then descend into the Tolok Valley (2,400m). Stay with a local family in the nearby village, distance 50km.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Accomodation: Local family.

Day 7 – Cycling in the mountains.

Rather a short distance to cycle today into a beautiful valley – 44km. Overnight in tents (2,900m).

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Accomodation: Tents.

Day 8 – Kara-Kudjur Valley – Kochkor.

Leave the valley and climb to 3,400m, and then descend into the Kara-Kudjur Valley. Continue through the valley to Sary-Bulak, and then on to the village of Kochkor. 110km cycling. Stay in B&B.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Accomodation: Local family.

Day 9: Kochkor – Kara-Tala village.

From Kochkor to Kara-Tala, a village on the south shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. After 65km we reach the village. Stay in a village house.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Accomodation: Bed&Breakfast.

Day 10 – Kongur-Ölöng Valley, Toguz Bulak Village – Temir-Kanat Yurt Camp.

We continue cycling over a tarmac, sometimes sandy, rather difficult road through the Kongur-Ölöng Valley and Toguz Bulak Village to Temir-Kanat Yurt Camp. This yurts camp is exclusive to Ecotour guestsTotal 60km. Stay in yurts.

Day 11 – From Temir-Kanat to Sonun Yurt Camp.

From Temir-Kanat downhill to Sonun, a yurt camp at the lake located in a dry, semi-dessert area. Here you can swim. Stay in yurt 65 km cycling.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Accomodation: Yurts.

Day 12 – Bokonbaevo – Bos-Salkyn Yurt Camp.

Back to the main road and in Bokonbaevo at 1,700m start climbing up to the Bos-Salkyn Yurt Camp at 2,500 m. Total 32 km. Stay in yurts.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Accomodation: Yurts.

Day 13 – Tosor Canyon – Jenish village.

Continue from Boz-Salkin over difficult but beautiful route through the Tosor Canyon. Descend though the gorge to the lake (21km). We continue on to Jenish where we stay in very nice B&B close to the lake shore.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Accomodation: Local family.

Day 14 – Juuku Valley – Karakol.

Cycle into the Juuku Valley with its impressive rock formations. Possible to take a bath in a traditional hot spa, tarmac road. Return to main road and then by minibus to Karakol. Stay in guesthouse.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Accomodation: Guest House.

Day 15 – Karakol – Kara-Kyz Yurt Camp.

From Karakol to the yurt camp Kara-Kyz Yurt Camp (2000m). Stay in yurt.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Accomodation: Yurts.

Day 16 – San-Tash Pass – Cholpon-Ata.

Descent to main road and continue until the turn off to the San-Tash Pass. Cross the pass and plateau (2,200m) and descend into next valley, where we turn to the west and after a total of 90km continue by minibus to Cholpon-Ata, a resort on the edge of Lake Issyk -Kul. Stay in hotel.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Accomodation: Hotel.

Day 17 – Cholpon-Ata – Bishkek.

By car from Cholpon-Ata to Bishkek. Stay in hotel Umai or equivalent.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Accomodation: Hotel.

Day 18 – Manas Airport, departure.

Transfer to Manas Airport and departure.

Meals: breakfast.

Notes:

Temperatures in the mountains can be quite low at the start and end of season so some warm clothes may be required. A raincoat/cape and hiking shoes/boots are strongly recommended. We also recommend to everybody that they bring their own hard-hat and fluorescent vest as they are not available here.

Accommodation: In Bishkek you will spend the night in the Umai Hotel, a guesthouse close to the centre of town. En route you will stay with local families in villages, in tents (transported by car), guest houses or in yurt camps.

Group: 4 to 8 participants.

Distance: 45 to 115km a day, depending on the level of difficulty of the stage. You will be accompanied by an English speaking interpreter. Your luggage will be transported in a vehicle.

Bicycle: Ideally you should bring your own bicycle. However bicycle rental is available. Because of the bad condition of the tracks it has to be a solid mountain bike. No other bikes are suitable.
